The Lagan Group was formed in the 1960s on the outskirts of Belfast by the late Peter Lagan, when he opened his first quarry at Whitemountain. Fifty years on, the Lagan Group remains in private ownership and ranks among the leading construction products, house building and civil engineering companies across the island of Ireland and the UK. 

The company now employs in excess of 600 staff and has a turnover of over £200 million. The Lagan Group has an innovative approach to construction, delivering consistent customer satisfaction, and credits its success to its commitment to providing quality and reliable services and comprehensive quality product ranges.

Whitemountain

Whitemountain operates within the Lagan Group and ranks among the most successful and diverse engineering, contracting and quarry materials companies in the UK and across the island of Ireland. It is a renowned market leader in quarry materials, asphalt, surfacing, airfield maintenance, highway maintenance, bitumen and civil engineering, supply aggregates, and surfacing products to major UK and European–based contractors.

In January 2016, Whitemountain and independent aggregates company, Breedon Aggregates were awarded a contract worth up to £55 million to supply and lay asphalt on the £745 million Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route (AWPR). The two companies are supplying and laying more than 500,000 tonnes of asphalt material, which is being constructed by AWPR Construction Joint Venture on behalf of Aberdeen Roads. The AWPR is the longest roads construction project currently under development in the UK, extending from Stonehaven in the south to Tipperty in north Aberdeenshire. It comprises 55 kilometres of dual carriageway, 22 kilometres of slip roads and 39 kilometres of side roads and accesses. Whitemountain was also appointed as the principal contractor of a £13 million contract at London Luton Airport, undertaking the construction and civil engineering of the landside infrastructure and transport facilities as part of the Airport’s £100 million redevelopment project.

Lagan products

Lagan Products represents the cement and clay products divisions of the Lagan Group. Its state–of–the–art manufacturing facilities produce market–leading building products for the construction industries in the UK, across the island of Ireland and Europe. At the core of Lagan Products is Lagan Cement, which operates from an ultra–modern cement manufacturing facility in Kinnegad, County Westmeath. A wide range of quality cements are manufactured and distributed across the island of Ireland, the UK and also throughout the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain and France. Lagan Cement is also used as a key material in producing Lagan roof tiles and Lagan Concrete products.

Lagan Cement Products has a track record of delivering award–winning products. In late 2015, Lagan Cement Products in association with Command Alkon, collected the Innovation/Technology Award for the company’s new MOBILEcommerce app at the Concrete Society NI Awards.

In total, Lagan Products companies produce over 700,000 tonnes of cement annually, over 13 million roof tiles, over 12 million clay bricks, over 200,000 cubic metres of concrete, and over 5.5 million concrete blocks. The clay products divisions produce a vast range of clay facing bricks, chimney systems, firebacks, flue liners, and traditional chimney pots for customers throughout the island of Ireland and the UK.

Lagan Homes

With over 30 years’ experience in the house building sector, Lagan Homes (NI) and Lagan Homes (England) form part of the Lagan Group, offering quality homes within their respective regions.

Widely recognised as a leading home builder in Northern Ireland, Lagan Homes NI has been awarded many National House Building Council (NHBC) accolades for its quality developments, site leadership, and customer satisfaction. Its recent acquisitions of two sites at Rathgael Road (worth £90 million) include more than 200 family dwellings at Lynn Park Hall and up to 350 family homes at Helen’s Wood in Bangor.

In England, Lagan Homes has developed an impressive portfolio in the Midlands and the South East, and the company has a strong reputation for innovative housing, in addition to ambitious expansion plans for the immediate future. In February 2016, Lagan Homes England announced plans for the construction of 39 homes in East Hanney.

Welsh Slate

The Lagan Group has maintained a high level of excellence through providing superior products via Welsh Slate, the world’s leading supplier of high quality slate for exterior and interior design applications. At 500 million years in the making, it is widely recognised as the finest natural slate in the world. A firm favourite with architects, developers and interior designers, it is regularly specified for its inherent beauty and unique qualities. For external purposes, it includes roofing slates, slate cladding, slate paving, walling, sills and copings, landscaping, and aggregates for civil engineering works. For internal purposes, it includes slate tiles for flooring and fire surrounds/ hearths, worktops/counters, and a stunning range of slate dinnerware designed by two–Michelin–starred chef, Michael Caines.

Welsh Slate has been involved in the re–roofing many of many of the world’s most prestigious buildings not only in Ireland and the UK, but across the world. Some notable worldwide projects include St Patricks Cathedral in Dublin, Buckingham Palace in London and the Government house in Melbourne, Australia.

Lagan Bitumen

Within the Group, Lagan Bitumen offers market– leading binder and emulsion production technology, fulfilling demand across the Lagan Group companies as well as supplying quality products to the public sector, councils and private contractors. Lagan Bitumen operates its own terminal in Northern Ireland at Belfast Port, and its sister company facility is located at Dublin Port, operated by Lagan Asphalt Group. Lagan Bitumen is an import and distribution business, and is a trading division of Whitemountain.

Owning and operating its own ship, with a carriage capacity of 6,200 tonnes, enables Lagan to manage and control the supply of bitumen between refinery and Lagan terminals. These terminals receive cargoes

of crude bitumen, sourced from world markets, which is then manufactured to a fine degree of accuracy as straight–run and cut–back bitumen and polymer modified bitumen (PMB).

Lagan Asphalt Group

Kevin Lagan is the majority shareholder in the Lagan Asphalt Group, a leading provider of road surfacing and contracting services based across the island of Ireland and the UK, which operates internationally in both the public and private sectors. Lagan Asphalt Group is made up of independent and privately–owned construction, manufacturing and civil engineering companies and is a prime contractor of diverse civil engineering activities with expertise in the construction and surfacing of highways and airfields. Lagan Asphalt Group products include bitumen, asphalt, aggregates, special surfacing products, sand and screeds.

Recent projects include the commencement of Phase 2 of a $6 million contract for the manufacture and supply of polymer modified bitumen (PMB) for use in a road project in the Sultanate of Oman. The contract involves the manufacture and supply of PMB for a 40 kilometre section of a six–lane expressway over a two– year period.
