Warrenpoint Harbour Authority (WHA) has issued a call to local groups and charities encouraging applications to its Christmas Community Fund before the deadline on Friday 6th December.

Now in its 5th year, the Community Fund supports organisations to undertake valuable work and to bring about positive change in the local area. The fund is open to community-based groups and charities in Warrenpoint and the wider Newry, Mourne and Down council area.

Since launching in 2020, the WHA Community Fund has distributed more than £90,000 to 78 different organisations across Warrenpoint and beyond, including support delivered to community initiatives ranging from sports clubs to counselling services.

Commenting at the 2024 launch, Warrenpoint Port CEO David Holmes said: “Our annual Christmas Community Fund is the culmination of our year-round commitment to the local community. We’re delighted to have the opportunity to support the good causes making a real difference on the ground in Warrenpoint and further afield.

“On behalf of Warrenpoint Port I’d also like to recognise and thank our partners, port tenants and wider stakeholders, who we have worked with collectively to grow the overall reach and impact of the Fund through the years. We look forward to receiving and reviewing this year’s applications and continuing our support of community initiatives locally.”

Among the projects awarded funding last year were the MS Therapy Centre who received £500 to cover the cost of oxygen therapy for 15 individuals in the Newry and Mourne area, while £400 was awarded to the Happiness Café in Kilkeel for purchase of smart speakers to aid those suffering from dementia.

The Warrenpoint Harbour Community Fund aims to support as many people as possible, therefore the maximum request is £500 unless there are exceptional circumstances, and is subject to affordability.

To apply the recipient organisation must be based within a 15-mile radius of Warrenpoint Port and the project supported should promote the health, wellbeing, and environment of local people.
